As a child, happiness was absent. Mother and Daddy warred constantly...not behind closed doors or in private like most parents, no.
Mother's eyes were blackened more than once and it had all happened right in front of her. She would sit weeping while they cursed at each other. There were nights she would even fall asleep while the arguing persisted. Many mornings she would awaken on the sofa, or under her bed, wherever she had sobbed herself to sleep from the night before.
Then she remembered Mother with Mr. Roberts and how happy she had seemed...but she knew that Daddy would find out...and when he did...she was right, all hell broke loose in that apartment...and that night transformed a frightened little girl into one that no longer felt pain...not after what happened.
